Illuminating Humanities
Illuminating Humanities is a portfolio of Don Foran's literary endeavors, a retired professor and lover of literature and humanities. Through his poetry, essays, and selected literary quotes, he aims to offer grist for our imagination and food for our journey.
Thank you for checking out the many quotations, mostly literary, which I have loved and cited in classrooms and other venues throughout my life. My doctorate was in American Literature (University of Southern California, 1973) and my post-doctoral MA (Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley) was in Theology and Public Policy. That academic background might help explain the range of quotations and writings. For 44 years I taught, mostly at colleges and universities (Seattle U., St. Martin's U., The Evergreen State College, Centralia College)-- seventeen of those years as a Jesuit and four years a priest, the rest as a husband and father living in Olympia, WA. I relish every moment with the thousands of students I have come to know and love. I share some of my enthusiasms with you today because my friend and former student Rob Cahill has here assembled material I have felt and still feel illuminates life, helps us make sense of what it means to be fully alive, mind and heart engaged in this wonderful world which can be so cruel to so many of our sisters and brothers. I hope my quotations, poems, and essays are grist for your imagination, food for your journey.
The book I edited, Transitions in the Lives of Jesuits and Former Jesuits, is now available. All proceeds go to Ignatian-inspired social justice ministries. The sixty-six narratives are inspiring, powerful, funny, and poignant.
